The Home Row Strategy
Proper typing starts with the Home Row. Rest your left fingers simultaneously
on A (Pinky), S (Ring), D (Middle), F
(Index) and your right fingers on J (Index), K (Middle),
L (Ring), ; (Pinky). Your thumbs rest gently on the spacebar.
Every key on the keyboard is assigned to a specific finger. After reaching up or down to press a
key, your finger should always return back to its home position.

Looking down resets your visual tracking. Trust your hands. Review the Home Row Strategy.
Accuracy First
Backspaces destroy WPM. Never practice to type faster until you can type at 98%+ accuracy. Master Hagakure Mode.
Read Ahead
Don't stare at the word you're typing. Let muscle memory execute the current word while your eyes scan the next 2 words.
Relentless Pacing
Sprint-and-pause typing ruins averages. Use Shadow Mode to train a metronomic, entirely consistent rhythm.
Ergonomic Posture
Keep your wrists floating or resting lightly on a pad. Feet flat, back straight. Tension in your shoulders creates typos in your fingers.
Quality Hardware
If you're typing on a mushy laptop keyboard, you're fighting the hardware. A good mechanical keyboard with tactile switches changes everything.
Rest & Refresh
Typing speed plateaus when muscles fatigue. If your WPM begins to drop consistently, take a 10-minute break. Don't grind through fatigue.
Common Mistakes
Beginner: The "Index Hunt"
Typing exclusively with 2-4 index/middle fingers. This hard-caps your speed at 40-50 WPM. You must engage your ring and pinky fingers immediately.
Intermediate: The "Yo-Yo" Vision
Looking at the screen to read, looking down at the keyboard to type, looking back up to check for errors. This constant shifting guarantees you will never break 60 WPM. You must learn to trust your proprioception (muscle memory).
Intermediate: Ignoring the Right Shift
Pressing the Left Shift to capitalize letters typed by the left hand (like A, S, W) forces awkward contortions. Use the Right Shift for left-hand letters, and Left Shift for right-hand letters.
Intermediate: Planted Palms
Anchoring your wrists/palms firmly on the desk severely restricts your fingers' range of motion, forcing awkward stretches for top-row keys. Keep your wrists slightly floating to allow your whole hand to assist with reach.
Intermediate: Heavy Hitting
Smashing every key all the way down to the plastic (bottoming out) wastes energy and critical milliseconds. Most mechanical switches actuate halfway down. Train your fingers to tap lightly and immediately release to the next key.
Advanced: The Backspace Habit
Instinctively pressing Backspace without thinking when you feel a typo. At high speeds (90+ WPM), hitting backspace breaks your entire visual tracking rhythm. Learn to type through minor errors or slow down your base pace.
Advanced: Staccato Typing
Waiting for the previous key to fully return up before pressing the next one. On a good mechanical keyboard, you should practice "Roll-Overs"—pressing subsequent keys while the previous ones are still held down.
Advanced: The Rogue Thumb
Using the same thumb for the Spacebar regardless of which hand typed the last letter. Professional typists map their Spacebar thumb opposite to the hand that just finished a word to avoid split-second hand-locking.
Pro: Not using Alt-Gr / Numpad
Reaching wildly for special symbols or numbers on the top row when writing code/data. Pros master the peripheral keys with strict pinky discipline or utilize layers/macros so their hands never leave the Home Row.
Advanced: The Floating Hand
Lifting your entire hand off the keyboard to reach keys like Backspace, Enter, or the arrow keys instead of stretching your pinky. This forces you to constantly re-find the Home Row, killing your momentum.
Advanced: Burst Typing
Typing easy words (the, and, of) at 150 WPM and then practically stopping to type complex words (rhythm, queue) at 40 WPM. Your average speed will plummet. Smooth, metronomic typing at 90 WPM is always faster.
Pro: The Bottom Row Slide
Using the wrong finger for bottom row keys, especially C, X, and V. Many self-taught typists use their left index finger for all three, which pulls the hand wildly out of position. Strict adherence to proper finger mapping is required for elite speeds.
Pro: Punctuation Hesitation
Slowing down drastically for commas, periods, or quotes. Elite typists treat punctuation exactly like letters in their mental buffer. A period string shouldn't break your combo flow any more than typing an 'e' would.
The 1% Habit
The Plateau Illusion
Progress is never linear. You will spend 90% of your time on flat plateaus where WPM doesn't budge, followed by a sudden 15 WPM jump overnight. Trust the plateau—it's where the actual rewiring of your brain happens.
Consistency > Duration
15 minutes of focused Hagakure Mode every day is better than 3 hours once a week. Muscle memory is built in sleep, not in exhaustion.
Detachment from Numbers
When you obsess over the WPM counter, anxiety tightens your fingers, resulting in errors. Focus entirely on the physical sensation of flow and the rhythm of the words. The number at the end is just a byproduct of that flow.
Embracing the Struggle
If practice feels easy, you aren't improving. You must force yourself into the zone of 'desirable difficulty'—practicing words, speeds, and modes that frustrate you. Frustration is the literal sensation of new neural pathways forming.
The "Warm-up" Fallacy
Your first 5 minutes of typing every day will be your worst. Do not judge your skill by your warm-up runs. Your tendons and brain need a few minutes of blood flow to sync up. Give yourself grace during the first few tests.
Sleep is Practice
You do not learn while you practice; you learn while you sleep. Practice simply flags the neural circuits that need to be strengthened during deep sleep. If you trade sleep for 3 hours of late-night typing, you are wasting your effort.
